Financial assistance provided to community groups

FINANCIAL Assistance has been provided to many community groups following the recent meeting of Port Stephens Council on 25th October.

The Tilligerry Art Group, which was formed in 2003 by a small group of Tilligerry artists and artisans who saw the need for a local network to provide encouragement and support, will receive a $2,000 donation from the Municipal Fund for the gallery’s automatic rolling doors.

Riding for the Disabled Association (Raymond Terrace and Lower Hunter Centre), a voluntary non-profit organization that provides opportunities for anyone with a disability to enjoy safe, healthy and therapeutic equestrian activities in Australia, will receive a $400 donation from the fund of the mayor to avoid the trash fire for the centre’s clean-up day.

The Salamander Bay Men’s Shed will also receive a $2,000 donation from the City Fund for the Men’s Shed Building Fund.

Finally, Councilor Giacomo Arnott will provide West Ward funds to the Rivergum Kinship Carers Group.

The Rivergum Kinship Carers Group exists to assist all family carers with support when caring for the children of family members.

With limited funds, but a vital support service, Cr Arnott decided to provide $300 to cover hall rental costs for the group.

Dr. Arnott addressed the Council regarding the donation.

“I have had various relationships with the group over the years and I know how hard these people work to care for the people they care for.

“These grandparents are often placed in complex parenting situations and having a group where they can exchange notes, relax, interact with others in the same situation and know they have support from other people in the same situation is really, really important,” Cr Arnott said.

“I hope these funds will enable the group to continue to hold its meetings, maintaining a home for such vital service.”
