‘Delay in financial aid adding to the woes of relatives of farmers who ended lives’

The Human Rights Forum (HRF), Rythu Swarajya Vedika (RSV) and the Denotified and Nomadic Tribes Political Front (DPF) have urged the government of Andhra Pradesh to provide immediate financial assistance to the bereaved families of farmers who ended their lives.

Visiting seven bereaved farming families who took the extreme measure, a delegation of HRF, RSV and DPF members said the families’ main problem was the delay in promised relief.

GO No. 43 provides financial aid of ₹7 lakh and a rehabilitation program for family members of farmers who have committed suicide. Only two of the seven families of the deceased farmers – Juturu Srinivasa Reddy from Mikkilimpeta village in Kodavaluru mandal and Kalicheti Penchal Reddy from Kolagatla village in Sangam mandal – have been compensated, they found.

Other farming families visited by the team were those of Kakarakayala Chenna Kesavulu (49), Pothi Suraiah (45) Challa Bhaskar Reddy (35), Chevuri Suresh and Juturu Srinivasa Reddy, they said in a statement on Thursday. communicated. Most of those who committed suicide were debt-ridden sharecroppers who ended their lives in the absence of institutional credit and overreliance on private lenders. They also lacked access to reliable and reasonably priced inputs and a remunerative price for their products. .

The three-member Audit and Certification Committee headed by the Divisional Revenue Officer had not visited any of these five villages as required by the GO. The mandal-level committee headed by the tehsildar also did not visit them, leaving the families embarrassed. None of the sharecroppers had received a Cultivator Rights Card (CCRC), they added.

Only 713 families of the 2,105 farmers who ended their lives in the state from June 2019 to the end of 2021 had been compensated under GO 43. The team wanted the government to include the one-time loan settlement in the financial arrangement in order to attenuate the load of the debt of the families.

The team members were RSV State Committee Member B. Kondal, DPF National Officer Mr. Subba Rao, HRF State Committee Member G. Rohith, HRF PA and member of the Telangana VS Krishna Coordinating Committee.
